90u Rosin: What Does 90u Mean? A Practical Micron Guide

When a jar of hash rosin says 90u or 90µm, the number refers to a micron size used during the hash-separation process before the hash is pressed into rosin. A micron—one micrometer—is one millionth of a meter.

The important point is that 90u is a process descriptor, not a universal quality grade. It tells you something about how the hash was fractionated, but it does not tell you everything about the starting material, cleanliness, aroma, flavor, storage, or final rosin quality.

Why micron sizes are used in hash making

Resin glands and other particles separated from cannabis are not all the same size. Ice-water hash makers use mesh screens or filter bags with measured openings to separate material into different fractions. Those openings are commonly described in microns.

A label such as 90u generally identifies the micron fraction selected for the hash that was later pressed. Exact collection ranges and naming conventions can differ by producer, so a product labeled 90u should not be interpreted as meaning that every trichome is exactly 90 microns in diameter.

Does 90u automatically mean “best”?

No. Some cultivars produce resin heads that concentrate well in particular micron ranges, but trichome morphology varies. The quality of the plant, maturity at harvest, washing technique, contamination, drying, pressing, curing, storage, and handling all affect the final result.

That is why two jars carrying the same micron label can still look, smell, taste, and handle very differently.

90u vs mixed-micron rosin

A single-micron or narrow-fraction rosin is made from a selected hash fraction. A mixed-micron rosin combines material collected from a broader range of screens. Neither description is a complete quality judgment. A broader mix may represent more of the plant’s resin population, while a selected fraction may emphasize a particular part of it.

Where 90u fits into the full process

  1. Cannabis is selected as starting material.
  2. Trichomes are separated into hash.
  3. Mesh screens divide the hash into micron fractions.
  4. A selected fraction—such as the one labeled 90u—is dried and prepared.
  5. The hash is pressed with controlled heat and pressure to express rosin.
  6. The rosin may be sold fresh-pressed or cured into another consistency.

For broader technical background, peer-reviewed literature describes rosin as a solventless concentrate produced through mechanical pressure and moderate heat. See the published rosin study.

How to read a 90u product listing

  • Micron label: tells you about hash fractionation.
  • Cold cure / fresh press: tells you about post-press handling or texture.
  • Live: generally tells you the starting material was kept fresh-frozen.
  • Hash rosin: tells you refined hash was pressed rather than flower directly.
  • Batch and testing information: tells you about that specific production lot.
